The historic waterfront at St. Augustine, Florida

Financial Advisor in St. Augustine, Florida

In short

Oliver Wealth Management is a retirement planning firm with its office at 6 Manatee Ct in St. Augustine, serving people across the city and St. Johns County. We work with people roughly ten years either side of retirement and handle the whole picture: turning savings into retirement income, Medicare enrollment, the tax consequences of how you withdraw, long-term care, and what eventually passes to your family. Advisory services are offered through MariPau Wealth Management, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser.

What retirement planning looks like here

St. Augustine has two kinds of retirement. Some people have lived in St. Johns County for decades and are working out how to stop working. Others arrived from somewhere colder and somewhere taxed, still holding accounts, advisors and assumptions from that other state.

The second group has more to reconsider than they usually expect. A plan built for a New York or Michigan tax picture does not automatically make sense once you are a Florida resident. Withdrawal order, Roth conversions and the timing of a property sale can all look different here, and so can estate documents drafted under another state’s law.

Three Florida points that change the plan

Florida has no state individual income tax, and the rule sits in the state constitution rather than in a statute that changes each session. Retirement here is still taxed: federal income tax applies to withdrawals from tax-deferred accounts, and the order you take them in decides how much you pay.

The second is homestead. Florida’s homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of a permanent residence, and portability lets a longtime Florida homeowner carry accumulated Save Our Homes benefit to a new home in the state. Both are filed with the St. Johns County Property Appraiser, and both have deadlines. If you have moved recently, check that the paperwork was filed.

Living on the coast adds a third. Flood insurance is separate from homeowners insurance, and the National Flood Insurance Program is one place to get it. Flood and windstorm coverage both belong in the retirement cash-flow plan as recurring costs.

How we work with people here

A first meeting is a conversation: we want to understand what you have, what you are worried about, and what you want retirement to look like, and we will tell you whether we think we can add value.

From there the work follows five steps: discover, strategize, execute, advanced planning, and oversight and forward planning. Blake appears on WSOS 103.9 and hosted the Psychology of Retirement seminar at the Epic Theatre in St. Augustine, and the radio recordings and future events are a low-pressure way to hear how we think before you sit down with us.

Common questions

Where exactly is your office?

6 Manatee Ct, St. Augustine, FL 32080. It is across the A1A bridge from the historic district, roughly ten minutes from downtown St. Augustine depending on the bridge. We meet clients at the office or by video.

Do I need a certain amount saved to work with you?

We do not publish a minimum. A first conversation will tell you whether we are a good fit, and if we are not, we will say so.

I just moved to Florida. What should I be looking at first?

Three things: whether your homestead exemption is filed with the county property appraiser, whether a Florida attorney should review estate documents drafted under another state’s law, and whether your withdrawal plan still makes sense with no state income tax.

Do you only work with people in St. Johns County?

No. We work with people across Northeast Florida, and Blake also works with clients in Michigan. The office is here in St. Johns County.
