Retirement Planning for Jacksonville
In short
Oliver Wealth Management works with people in Jacksonville who are approaching retirement rather than already in it, from its office in St. Augustine. The questions are different from a retiree’s: what to do with an employer retirement plan when you leave, whether company stock has become the largest risk you own, how to use the last high-earning years, and what the years before Medicare and Social Security are for. Advisory services are offered through MariPau Wealth Management, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser.
Planning while you are still working is a different job
The decisions available at 57 are wider than the ones available at 67, and several of them close quietly: how much goes into the plan and into which type of account, whether a concentrated position is unwound gradually or all at once, when a house is sold, and what the tax picture looks like in the first year with no salary. None of it is urgent, which is why it gets put off.
The employer plan, and the stock inside it
For many people still working, the largest asset is the employer retirement plan, and what happens to it when you leave has four possible answers, each treated differently by the IRS. A rollover done the wrong way can trigger withholding and a tax bill nobody intended.
Company stock accumulates quietly through the match, grants and purchase plans, and a position that was a tenth of the account can become a third of it without anyone deciding that. Investor.gov, the SEC’s investor education site, sums up diversification as not putting all your eggs in one basket. Unwinding a concentrated position has tax consequences and sometimes trading-window limits, which is why it is a plan rather than a single trade.
We do not prepare tax returns and we do not give tax advice. We work out what a decision would mean in your numbers and coordinate with your CPA so the two halves agree.
The Florida details that still apply
Duval County has its own property appraiser, so a homestead exemption on a Jacksonville home is filed there, not with St. Johns. If you have moved within Florida, portability of accumulated Save Our Homes benefit runs between the two counties’ appraisers, and it has deadlines. Ten minutes will confirm the paperwork went through.
Florida’s lack of a state individual income tax works differently while you are earning. It lowers the cost of a high-income year, which makes the last working years a good window for certain decisions, and once you retire it leaves only the federal side of withdrawal sequencing to manage.
Common questions
I am seven years from retiring. Is that too early to talk to someone?
It is close to the best time, because most of what can be changed is changed before you stop. Seven years gives room to adjust contributions, unwind a concentrated position gradually rather than in one taxable event, and plan the years between leaving work and starting Medicare and Social Security.
What should I do with my 401(k) when I leave my job?
There are generally four options and no universal right answer: leave it in the plan, move it to a new employer’s plan, roll it to an individual retirement account, or take it in cash, and the IRS treats each differently. The right one depends on the investment options and costs inside your plan, what you want the money to do, and the tax consequences.
Most of my retirement money is in my company’s stock. Is that a problem?
It is worth measuring before worrying about. The question is what share of everything you own sits in one company, and what happens to your plan if that company has a bad few years at the same time as your job does. If the answer is uncomfortable, unwinding it takes a plan, because of the tax and sometimes the trading windows.
